Masoor ke Chawal (Brown Lentil Flavored Rice )
"Give me a bowl of rice and I’m a happy girl!" The combination of lightly browned onions over this masoor (brown lentils) rice is simply yum, add some vegetable kofta curry on the side and it’s magic. You can use day-old rice too. Steam some masoor dal on the side and add it to the rice with a dash of jeera (cumin) tadka.
Ingredients-
1/2 cup Masoor dal (brown lentils)
1 cup basmati rice (or any other rice if your choice)
1/2 onion thinly sliced and browned lightly
1 tsp oil
1/2 jeera (cumin seeds)
Salt to taste
Spring onions or cilantro for garnishing
Method-
- Soak basmati rice and masoor dal for 30 minutes.
- Heat oil in a pan. Add jeera to this and let it crackle.
- Drain the water and add rice to the pan.
- Sauté on low heat for a minute or two.
- Add 1 1/2 cup boiling hot water to this, add salt to taste and stir. Now cover it and let the rice and masoor dal cook on low to medium heat.
- Once the rice is cooked, add the lightly browned onions and mix it.
- Finally garnish this masoor ke chawal with finely chopped spring onions or cilantro.
- Serve it as is or with your choice of vegetables (curry), raita, salad, on the side.
