Gavthi Mutton Curry (Rustic Mutton Curry)
Ingredients:
150-200 gms (6-8oz) of mutton
1 tbsp ginger-garlic green chili paste
100 gms (4oz) dry coconut
2-3 whole red chillies
1 tsp poppy seeds
30 ml (1 fl oz) oil
100 gms (4oz) onions, finely chopped
A pinch of turmeric powder
1/2 tsp whole garam masala
(Cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, bay leaves)
1 tsp Goda masala
100 ml (4oz) thick coconut milk
100 ml (4oz) thick coconut cream
1 tbsp tamarind pulp (optional)
Finely chopped cilantro 1 tbsp, for garnishing
Salt to taste
Method:
- Marinate mutton pieces with ginger-garlic-green chili paste. Let it rest in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to an hour.
- Heat oil in a wok/ kadhai. Add the whole garam masala, dried coconut, poppy seeds, and half of the chopped onions. Cool this mix for a few minutes or until the mix turns to a slight golden brown.
- Let this mix cool and then grind it to a fine masala/ paste.
- In the same kadhai/ wok, sauté the remaining chopped onions until golden brown.
- Now add the paste to the kadhai/ wok. Sauté until the oil separates.
- Next add the mutton pieces, and sauté for a good 5 minutes on low to medium flame.
- Add turmeric powder, goda masala, and tamarind pulp. Sauté till cooked.
- In the end, add coconut milk and coconut cream, and let the gravy simmer.
- Close the lid and let the mutton cook for about 20 minutes on low to medium flame. Garnish with lots of cilantro.
- Serve this Gavthi Mutton with hot chappatis and rice. With onions and lemon wedges on the side.
